The Pilates Method

It is a unique method of body conditioning that stretches and strengthens the muscles, improves flexibility, balance, breathing, posture and alignment.

It trains you to recognise your strengths and your weaknesses, while providing you with the means of correcting those weaknesses.

Other exercise systems work on strengthening the muscles themselves, focusing on working the limbs. Pilates, concentrates on strengthening the central core and using abdominal muscles to
control the different movements. It also encourages you to focus your mind as you exercise the body, gradually improving your general awareness,co-ordination and overall alignment.

The growing interest in maintaining an holistic lifestyle, sustaining a level of health and fitness and achieving a sense of well-being in body, mind and spirit, has led to the popularity in the principles and practice of Pilates. A further reason is its potential to change the body shape, becoming stronger and firmer without the disadvantage of building unwanted bulk.

The technique allows you to use your body more effectively and efficiently, even when carrying out mundane daily activities.

Pilates does not require you to give up your current fitness routine or favourite sport. Quite
opposite, it was intended as a complement to other exercises, by strengthening, rebalancing and realigning the body, while also improving body awareness and reducing the risk of injuries.

Finally, because the exercises are all adaptable to the needs of the individual, a major attraction of Pilates is that it is suitable for anyone, regardless of age, size or level of fitness.

It is also beneficial to those who have never taken any exercise programme and those
who are wishing to rehabilitate from an injury.

Principles of the Pilates Method

  • Concentration -
That-important mind-body connection. Conscious control of movement, enhances body awareness.

  • Centering   Control/Precision -
A mental focus within the body calms the spirit. A particular focus on the torso (abs, pelvic girdle, lower back, gluts), develops a strong core and enables the rest of the body to function efficiently.
  • Stabilizing -
Before you move you have to be still. Makes for a safe starting place for mobility.

  • Control/ Precision-

It's not about intensity or multiple "reps," it's more about proper form for safe, effective results.

       .  Fluidity -
Smooth, continuous motion rather than jarring repetitions. Pilates has a grace and elegance to it.

  • Breathing -
Deep, coordinated, conscious diaphragmatic patterns of inhales and exhales initiate movement,
help activate deep muscles and keep you focused.
  • Alignment -
Proper alignment is key to good posture. You'll be aware of the position of your head and neck on   the
spine and pelvis, right down through the legs and toes.
  • Integration -
Several different muscle groups are engaged simultaneously to control and support movement. All
principles come together, making for a holistic mind-body workout.
